Writing As Art, Editing & Publishing
Writing As Art, Editing, and Publishing is a 56 pages self-guided, workshop based, illustrated book that takes writers through the phases and pages of self-publishing in any genre. We have the tools to publish today that were often out of our reach as recently as five-to-ten years ago. Particularly, "Indie" publishing has had a clear historical path to success beginning with many great authors. If we choose, like some before us, to publish ourselves and commit to the cost and specifics self-publishing, we can have artistic control and possible higher returns from our book promotions, signings and sales. For me, as a self-publishing advocate, editing and moving a book to the point of sales, can only begin when the author has an authentic printed proof copy of his or her book in their hands. Anything before this: typed and re-typed revisions pages, inserted notes, and partial or complete sentence inserts, etc. on your computer files or standard print paper, is still in artistic phases and pages of writing. The writer makes a commitment to publish when they upload and print an edited "proof copy" book with an illustrated cover, title and legal copyright page, introduction, dedication, acknowledgements, content page, well written contents, summary or about the author page and correctly formatted back cover bio page.

Blue Mountain Highway Home
We knew this Friday morning would come...
With every turn of the eggs, my mother looked at me thumbing through the army induction papers we had signed together just two months before my high school graduation. I was seventeen and had received my formal orders to report this afternoon for my physical and deployment for basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. As the smell of grits, gravy, white ham and biscuits continued to drift from the wooden stove, she placed a copy of the Waynesboro New-Virginian by my plate. Carefully tucked within its folded pages was a brown leather writing notebook, a cigarette lighter and copy of Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy. On my bus to the recruitment station, I met a young precocious poet, singer-song writer... I had always wanted to write Jamie’s story. It lay in a desk drawer for years until I finally had the courage to take a look at my notes, her songs and the memory of the time we spent together. She had such an impact on my life and got me through my first year in the US army as a seventeen year old recruit who had never been more than a couple of miles from my Blue Ridge Mountain home. I tried to live up my promise as best I could. She lived up to hers and her memory has been embedded in my mind ever since.

My Alamance: A Photographer's Notebook
In July 2013, I invited Burlington Writers' Club members to take a heritage adventure with me and write their personal stories. A few others joined me later through my free "Writing as Art, Editing and Publishing" workshops hosted at several coffee cafes and the Graham Library. The stories would be about their historical, educational, artistic and cultural link to Alamance County. The goal was to produce a collection of individual short books titled The Heart of Alamance County Heritage Collection. As I assisted them in writing, editing and publishing their books, their stories became a part of my book, My Alamance: A Photographer's Notebook.

Published! Now What?
Since I published Writing As Art, Editing & Publishing in 2016, I have had many workshop participants and experienced authors asked me this question. The answer is obvious, but sometimes intimidating. Most of the writers I meet want to write, edit and publish, but do not want to deal with the marketing, sales and the promotions required to be a success as an independently published author. Remember, the simple answer to what’s the difference between traditional and independent publishing is not so simple.

Appalachian Sunrise: A Photographer's Notebook
Appalachian Sunrise: A Photographer's Notebook is a collection of my conversational prose-poetry, notes, reflections and captured moments illustrated with photographs taken along the way. Some are moving and others quite ordinary. That is life as I see it. There have been many people who have drifted into my life. All have made an impact. Many have shared their stories. Some have passed along images with a dark past. A few sought fame. Others looked for love. Occasionally, images stay frozen in my past and come back to me in my sleep as timeless portraits of life. I have always seen my life as a journey that started in the little village of Wintergreen located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Later in life, the same journey took me to the high mountains of Western North Carolina. I have travel much, seen a lot and often wished I had taken more time along the way to listen to others while listening to my own inner spirit.

100 books You Should Read But Probably Never Will
This book is the result of a major medical episode I experienced in 2010 when I collapsed in a semi-daze and my heart rate dropped to 32-36 beats. As I looked at my face plastered to the hard wood floor like frost on a pumpkin in the reflection of our kitchen trash compacter, I made two promises: one to myself and the other to God. I certainly never planned the outcome; ten published books of my own and 100 independently published authors with over 154 books in stores, craft shops, libraries and in the homes and hands of readers across the USA. It has been an amazing writing, book editing and independent publishing journey.

Rockfish Valley Photographer and his Poetry
This is my story in signature and classic black and white photography and narrative and lyrical poetry about growing up, living in and returning to the Rockfish River Valley, Nelson County, Virginia. It is where I met school mates, friends, writers, artists, poets, young and young at heart, who told me stories of the place they called home. Others told me it was the place they left when young, and returned later to raise children and grandchildren. Some, like me, came from work places and large communities and stayed into retirement and second careers. It's a place with rivers, some shallow--others deep--that flow through valleys and ravines with a history of their own.

1000 People of Meaning and Purpose
1000 People Of Purpose and Meaning who I’ve personally met, interviewed or photographed who impacted others, influenced their community or changes my life.On my 70th birthday, I was asked if I knew 100 notable people who had a made a difference in my life. It was a good question. So I took it on as a self determined project to make a list. Now as I am half-way through my 74th year, it appears to be 1000.
